Biochar Carbon Sequestration & Durable Carbon Removal

Biochar Carbon Sequestration

Biochar converts short-lived biomass carbon into a stable solid that can be measured, placed and kept out of the atmosphere.

Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air for free. The problem has always been the second half of the cycle: left to rot or burn, that biomass returns its carbon within months or years. Pyrolysis interrupts the return. The fixed carbon is locked into an aromatic structure that resists microbial and chemical breakdown, so the removal is durable rather than seasonal — and, crucially, physically countable.

Removal you can weigh

The attraction of biochar as a carbon dioxide removal pathway is that the product exists. It can be weighed, sampled, analysed for carbon content and tracked to where it was applied. Klean's 1 MW biochar plant in Japan, in operation since 2012 with Chubu Electric Power, Seiko Epson and the Toyama Research Institute, offsets more than 6,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year while producing around 1,000 tonnes of biochar annually. Those are plant numbers from an operating facility, not a modelled scenario.

Two offsets in one plant

Sequestration is only part of the carbon account. The same facility exports base-load green electricity — enough for roughly 1,000 homes — displacing generation that would otherwise be fossil-fired. A biochar project therefore earns on two fronts at once: the carbon that stays in the solid, and the emissions avoided by the energy that leaves the gate. Both have to be counted properly, and both have to be defensible to a buyer.

Permanence depends on process

Not all char is equally durable. Conversion temperature and residence time drive the degree of carbon aromatisation, which is what determines how long the carbon stays fixed. This is a reactor design question before it is a measurement question, which is why removal credibility starts in the engineering and not in the paperwork.

Building a removal project

A credible project needs a secure feedstock supply, a conversion plant sized to it, a destination for the char and an energy offtake that makes the economics work without the carbon revenue. Klean assembles those through feasibility studies and delivers plants turn-key. Carbon accounting methodology, plant performance data and project models are shared under NDA.

Build a carbon removal project on an operating precedent

Klean's Japanese biochar plant has been offsetting over 6,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year since 2012, while producing roughly 1,000 tonnes of biochar and base-load green power.
